Looks like this is the microcontroller I'll begin with... an Arduino Duelmilanove which is an open source mac friendly controller to work on generation one of my persistence of vision (POV) bicycle wheel project. You may have seen these about on DIY sites and on some bona fide products. This controller will most likely be too large for the final build, luckily folks sell kits to make your own boards like the Really Bare Bones Board which looks like the right shape to install along a spoke.
I have some other project ideas for the controller- let's say I have some fresh chocolate chip cookies which I have no intention of sharing. I may want to protect them with a little alarm system. Hook up a vibration detection switch, program the chip to send a signal to an amplified speaker when it senses motion- and there you have a simple deterrent.
